Root Canals

A root canal can save a tooth with internal infection. Your teeth are made of a hard outer shell called enamel, a soft inner layer of dentin, and a core of nerves called pulp. Damage to the pulp, from decay, infection, or injury, can literally kill a tooth. Adults often don’t think of teeth as living because growth is complete. However, the pulp in a tooth supplies nutrients and removes waste through the blood stream, just as cells do for your bodily organs. When infection occurs in tooth’s pulp, intense pain can occur due to a buildup of pressure right where the nerve of the tooth is located.

To save a tooth from extraction, a root canal may be indicated. Dr. Van Dyke will remove the infected tissue, fill the tooth with an inert substance, and apply a crown. While the pulp no longer exists to support the life of the tooth, the tooth structure can remain intact. This alleviates the need for a replacement tooth and keeps the natural bite (how upper and lower teeth fit together) intact. By relieving the inner pressure, pain is also relieved.
